Business Counselling

Running a business or holding a position of responsibility in a position at work can be extremely rewarding, but often it comes with a level of stress and anxiety that can be hard to manage.

I am a business consultant (and not a psychologist), however over the past 20 years I have had a lot of experience in dealing with people suffering form business stress.  I have found when assisting clients who are suffering from stress and anxiety that the following steps help to put clients in a better frame of mind in order to deal with stress in business -
  1. Being inside your own head and mulling over thoughts is not the best way to deal with problematic matters - in fact, it can be harmful to your mental state.  Instead, look outwardly from your own mind.  Try to be in the present and focus on others and address their needs, even if you feel you don't have time for it.  This will give you purpose and take your mind away from your difficult and stressful thoughts.
  2. Spending more time with the ones that you love, whether it is your children, partner, family or friends.  This is essential to being a able to cope with stress and anxiety.  It may seem to you that you cannot afford any time because you need to focus on solving the issues that are causing your stress and anxiety, but this time spent will actually help heal you and put you in a better position to tackle these issues.
  3. Getting back to nature is a great way for your body to heal and to get rejuvenated - to help clear your mind and to gain clarity.  Even a weekend away in the country or at the coast will mean you can come back and see things in a different light.  Instead of thinking about things in such detail and picking them apart, you may be able to see these issues from a broader, overall perspective.  You may also view the issues as somewhat minor compared to how you viewed them before you went away.
  4. If you are woken in the middle of the night with stressful thoughts about what to do at work or in your business, get up and take some notes down (with a pen and paper, not an electronic device) about what you are thinking about.  Putting your thoughts down on paper will assist in clearing your mind and getting back to sleep.
  5. Consciously try to replace any negative thoughts with those that make you feel good.  If a thought does not feel good, then you are most likely not on the path that is most beneficial to you.
These are just a few ways to start feeling better about yourself and your business or work.
